Which hand has to leave the handlebars when a rider wants a drink? CamelBak’s history begins with a practical access problem. Carrying water and reaching it during an activity are separate design tasks.
CamelBak New Zealand’s official history describes Michael Eidson, an emergency medical technician, improvising a hydration arrangement during the 1989 Hotter’N Hell 100 bicycle race. He filled an IV bag with water, placed it in a sock behind his cycling jersey, and ran a hose over his shoulder, with a clothespin controlling its end.
The story separates storage, delivery and flow control into distinct functions. A hands-free drinking arrangement removes the need to retrieve the container for each drink. That is KTT’s interpretation of the design problem. It does not mean users should keep moving when an activity requires a safe stop.
The same official history records cyclist Jeff Wemmer selling CamelBak packs at races, then visiting bicycle shops across the United States by motorcycle in 1993. Early distribution put the product in front of people who could recognise the use case directly.
Current Crux product literature offers a later example of user input. CamelBak says athletes, customers and colleagues wanted more water per sip and easier refilling. This is the brand’s account of its development priorities; KTT has not reviewed internal engineering records or independently verified product performance.
K.T.Tactical’s Mil Spec Crux 3L long reservoir provides a present-day example. CamelBak’s official Mil Spec Crux literature describes Quick Link Hydrolock modularity and one-handed flow control, a self-sealing bite valve, an opening cap and an ergonomic fill handle.

Each part addresses a step: filling, carrying, drinking, closing or disconnecting. A selection process should therefore check the reservoir compartment, tube routing, retention points and connector compatibility together. A long and a short reservoir can share a stated capacity while requiring different space.
Regular Crux and Mil Spec Crux have separate product documents. Figures from one version cannot be assigned to another. This article deliberately omits cross-version flow improvement percentages, weights and dimensions. Check the documentation for the exact model being purchased.
CamelBak’s official care guidance covers washing the reservoir and tube, rinsing, draining and drying before storage. It also describes pre-use checks and replacement options for bite valves, tubes and Quick Link components.
A detachable part still needs a compatible interface; a flow shutoff still needs proper care. Follow the relevant model instructions rather than transferring dishwasher or cleaning guidance from a bottle to a reservoir. This article treats the reservoir as a water-carrying product, not a water-purification system or a guarantee of drinking-water safety.
The useful lesson in CamelBak’s origin is the specificity of the problem. For equipment buyers, distributors and procurement teams, a practical evaluation can follow four checks:
This is a selection sequence, not a mission-performance guarantee. Defining the operating steps first gives capacity, shape and accessories a useful basis for comparison.

Historical details are the brand’s account; KTT observations are design and selection analysis. No independent flow, leak, environmental, durability or hygiene testing was conducted. This article makes no claim of military endorsement, specific certification or universal accessory compatibility. Availability and specifications require current model-level checks.
Which creates the most friction in your use: finding the valve, refilling the reservoir, or drying it after the activity?
The next Brand Story will use another brand’s parts and care documentation to examine how replacement support affects long-term use. The brand and model will be selected after source verification.
