How can a missing pair of pliers change a pocket tool? This issue connects Leatherman’s origins with the tasks that shape tool selection.

According to Leatherman’s official history, Tim and Chau Leatherman encountered car and plumbing repairs while travelling in Europe. A pocketknife left Tim wanting pliers. That practical gap became a starting point for a tool design.
The brand history records three years of work on the first prototype, followed by further development. In spring 1983, Cabela’s placed an initial order for 500 tools. The Pocket Survival Tool (PST) reached the market. Leatherman’s PST retrospective also shows early sketches and prototypes.
For us, the useful lesson is to identify recurring tasks before choosing functions. Holding a small part, turning a screw and opening packaging require different working surfaces. Putting them into one tool also makes grip, access and carrying habits relevant.
List three jobs you regularly encounter, then check whether the corresponding functions suit them. Work requiring substantial torque, precise fit or special protection still calls for suitable dedicated tools.
The PST origin story does not establish specifications, testing or suitability for other current models. These selection observations are KTT’s general analysis. Follow the instructions for the specific model and the safety requirements of the task.
Which task most often makes you reach for a pocket tool: gripping a part, turning a screw or opening packaging?
